A scene from a collecting trip in Beaufort County

The Fishes of North Carolina From Collecting Trips:

This is our thumbnail gallery of the fishes of North Carolina that we have encountered on collecting trips. These fishes are photographed using external strobes and macro gear, allowing us to reproduce the natural look of these animals. With that said, you may encounter some older shots that will remain a part of this gallery until we can get back into the field to reshoot those fish with our newest methods. These fishes were caught on a combination of micro fishing gear, seine nets, and dip nets.

  1. I know you photograph live fish in an aquarium with a black background, but the rest of your technique is a mystery to me. Beautiful photos, every one of them!

  2. Scott…this is incredible work! These need to be printed…matted and framed…then sold in gift shops in the tourist towns. Just incredible.

  3. I need to thank everybody at NC Fishes, at last I get around to it! I contacted Scott Smith back in July 2015 about using an image for one our invasive datasheets – Scott explained the situation (most images are CC licensed) and was more than happy for us (CABI) to use the NC Fishes resource – http://www.cabi.org/isc/datasheet/59964 – so, here’s the *belated thanks!*. It also goes without saying that the resource is both helpful and, aesthetically pleasing to look at – fishes are difficult to photograph (I know, I’m a photographer!), so these guys are doing an amazing job! It’s a great piece of work all round.
